Having performed thousands of home inspections in Pensacola and Fort Walton Beach, we have become the experts in many types of home inspections. In the past couple of weeks, we have had a deluge of calls wanting to know about toxic drywall, also known as Chinese drywall. These calls have come in from people wanting to know if this was installed in homes located in Destin, Fort Walton, Pensacola, Mobile and Daphne. A home inspection is the best way to evaluate any condition that may be suspect.
This is a product that was produced primarily in China, links to other areas have been alleged. The drywall was made with gypsum(which is what dry wall is made of) and the Chinese used a filler composed of sulfur ash and other sulfur compounds. There were up to 300 million square feet of this drywall imported to the U.S. and installed in homes between 2004 and 2008.
We have found this product during several home inspections, mostly in the Pensacola and Fort Walton areas.
This type of drywall emits an odor of burnt matches to rotten eggs. According to some industrial hygienists, this may lead to health risks.
If you have prolonged exposure to this, the olfactory senses become desensitized, and you may not even notice the odor. Many people thought this was just the "new house" smell, and did not seek additional advice from a professional home inspector.
The things to look for in your home are dark gray or black copper pipes, air conditioning coils, and copper wiring. If you are not sure about what you are looking for, we can provide a proper home inspection. Due to the large number of homes that were repaired and re-built during the 2004-2007 time frame, our home inspection services are limited to the following areas: Pensacola, Fort Walton Beach, Niceville, Navarre, Milton, Crestview, Gulf Breeze, Destin, Daphne, Gulf Shores, Fairhope, Spanish Fort and Mobile.
